Ear Training

I have been looking for some good resources that can help you develop a better ear.  I’m still looking for just the right thing.

In the meantime, try this exercise.

Go online and download a chromatic tuner. There are plenty of free ones out there. (I’m looking for a good one for you. I will post it when I find one that will work with PC and Mac.)

You can also use a handheld tuner. They are available at music stores.

A chromatic tuner has all of the notes. A guitar tuner will work, too, but your will only have a few notes to work with.

Take your tuner and sing into it.  It will tell you the note you are singing and how far you are away from the actual pitch. Try to move your voice around and see what it does.

You may have to experiment with moving your voice before you are ready to try to match the pitch. Just slide it back and forth noticing what is going on with your singing. Ask yourself, what does it feel like to move up or down? How can I make this go higher or lower?

When you’ve gotten comfortable moving around some see if you can make the note you are singing match with the note on the tuner.

The tuner may be moving around a lot. That’s OK. Just practice getting it there. Later you can work on sustaining it.
